Resonate with New Year Cheer!

New Year Resolutions, either love them or hate them. Celebrating from Halloween to year-end, it's easy to become swept up into the excessive shopping, spending, consuming, rich fatty foods and booze. Boom! We land squarely in the next year broke, hung over perhaps a little fatter, maybe all three. A little disgusted with the gluttony and excess of the holidays we vow to make a change. We emerge from the haze of the party armored with will power and a sense of purpose, ready to tackle our imperfections and begin with a clean slate. Fast-forward a few months, failure. Hopes and dreams left to die in a wasteland of disappointment tinged with guilt. As we all switch gears and unwind from the holiday grind, ride the wave of New Year intention and live up to your human potential.

January Factoid: 14th - Motorists were required by law to wear seat belts in 1986

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month in January

A HPV virus causes cervical cancer, not all viruses are destined to turn into cancer. Best way to avoid cancer is to keep your immune system strong.

"Both incidence and deaths from cervical cancer have declined markedly over the last several decades, due to more frequent detection of pre-invasive and cancerous lesions of the cervix from increased Pap screening".
(Source: Discovery Women's Health)

Do you have risk factors for cervical cancer?

  • Early age of first sexual intercourse
  • History of multiple sex partners
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus- a strain of genital warts)
  • A history of any sexually transmitted disease
  • Smoking
  • Women whose mothers where given DES (Diethylstilbestrol) during pregnancy to prevent miscarriages

Remind a woman in your life about the importance of a Pap smear screening. Call you local practioner to schedule.

Fat Free Farce

Fat free enthusiasts are killing themselves in a slow and painful way! Hot off the presses of February Avante Times! Confirmed benefits of healthy fat in your diet! Hooray! According to Lori Zitzmann, ANP at Avante Medical Center in Anchorage, AK wrote:

A fascinating new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that dietary fat is necessary for the absorption of nutrients from fruits and vegetables. It turns out that some of the best compounds in fruits and vegetables, certain vitamins and cancer fighting ingredients, are fat-soluble. That means fat needs to be present for the body to adequately absorb them. Studies are now showing that people who opt for no-fat salad dressings or who skip adding foods like avocado, egg, or cheese to a dish to avoid fat calories, are getting far less nutrition out of their salads and other vegetables.
